EIGHT children had to be airlifted to safety after becoming stranded on a stretch of beach on the Isle of Wight.

The children, along with four adults, were winched to a coastguard helicopter after spending the day at Blackgang Chine - near the southern most point of the island.

The coastguard were alerted at around 8pm yesterday and sent the helicopter.

A spokesman said: ‘We were called just after 8pm to a family of 12 who were unable to climb back up from Blackgang Chine.

‘They weren’t in any danger but it was decided that the helicopter would be sent to get them.

‘No-one was injured and no treatment was required.’
