STUART REED: The will of the people prevails for concert

THE people have spoken. The voting's over. The die is cast.

And, just like Brexit and Trump, the will of the people must prevail.

The Portsmouth Philharmonia and The Meon Valley Orchestra are already practising the most popular music that concert-goers have selected.

That’s why it’s called the People’s Concert.

Opening the concert with their usual flair, the Portsmouth Philharmonia will play well-known movements from Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony and the colourful L’Arlesienne Suite No 1 by Georges Bizet.

They will also premier a romantic serenade written by the modern Scottish composer Brian Bonsor, arranged by the orchestra’s own conductor Hugh Carpenter.

This item is the conductor’s own choice which will feature Hugh’s wife Wendy, an accomplished oboist from Drayton.

In the interval there will be free refreshments, including delicious home baked cakes by Irene Reed, Fareham’s answer to Mary Berry.

Lucky winners will be able to collect their fantastic raffle prizes at the interval.

During the second half of the concert the spotlight will fall on The Meon Valley Orchestra.

Under the baton of Lorraine Masson from Wickham, the orchestra will perform all-time favourites like The Sleeping Beauty Waltz, Crown Imperial, Fiddler on the Roof, Sailing By, The Dam Busters’ March and a whole lot more besides.

As in the first half, a couple of numbers will be the conductor’s own choice. Lorraine, with her impeccable musical taste, has selected two beautiful Songs Without Words by Felix Mendelssohn.
