Stunning black-tie banquet boosts coffers of navy charity in Portsmouth

A BANQUET in memory of those killed during the Battle of Jutland raised more than £130,000 for two naval charities.

The dinner was held at Mansion House, home of the Lord Mayor of London, and was supporting the 
Portsmouth-based Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity and the White Ensign Association.

Robert Robson, chief executive of RNRMC, was delighted with the donations.

He said: ‘They will be directed to where they will have the greatest impact on people’s lives, whether in this generation or the next.’

Some 250 guests joined the black-tie event, hosted by RNRMC president Admiral Sir Jonathon Band and WEA president Vice Admiral Sir Donald Gosling.

More than £30,000-worth of donations on the night were raised through a silent auction.

Guests had a chance to bid on a collection unique items, ranging from experience days with the Royal Navy and Royal Marines, to a flight with intrepid aviator Tracey Curtis-Taylor, a track day in an Aston Martin DB5 as well as an engraved 4in shell recovered from Portsmouth Harbour.
