Supercarrier base takes a step forward

FACILITIES that will power the Royal Navy's new supercarriers have taken a major leap forward.

The latest frequency converters have just been installed at the Portsmouth Naval Base.

The system will help play a crucial role in supplying energy to the new Queen Elizabeth-class carriers, HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales when docked in Portsmouth.

The work to upgrade the base is expected to cost about £100m. Areas being revamped also include the jetties, which are being reinforced to cope with the 65,000-tonne behemoths.

HMS Queen Elizabeth is due to arrive in Portsmouth in spring 2017.
