INSTEAD of buying flowers in memory of his mother, Julian Thomas will be donating the money to the Rowans Hospice.

And Mr Thomas, 51, of Festing Grove, Southsea, is asking others to consider making a donation in memory of mothers or grandmothers who have passed away for Mothering Sunday.

He said: ‘My mum Joyce passed away just after Christmas at the age of 87.

‘I have bought her flowers for Mother’s Day every year for 30-odd years and she always loved them.

‘The realisation I wouldn’t be doing that this year came as a bit of a shock.’

Mr Thomas contacted the Purbrook hospice to donate the money he would normally have spent on a bouquet for his mum.

‘I thought the money could be used to help someone else – my mum would have wanted that,’ added Mr Thomas.

‘I would like to encourage others to do the same, because a small donation can make a big difference.’
