Survivors of Saddam Hussein chemical attack rally in Portsmouth

SURVIVORS of a chemical attack by Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein united in Portsmouth to pay tribute to loved ones who were killed.

Dozens of people from the city’s Kurdish community gathered behind Southsea’s D-Day Museum to mark the 28th anniversary of the atrocity.

On March 16, 1988, the Iraqi dictator used chemical weapons to bomb the civilian population of Halabja, killing more than 5,000 people and leaving thousands more traumatised, homeless and with life-long injuries.

Some of the survivors and family members of those killed now live in Portsmouth.

Yesterday’s service, organised by the Chemical Victims Society UK and the Portsmouth Kurdish Community Association, saw flowers laid and a minute’s silence held.
