AN INVESTIGATION has been launched after a suspected arson attack in Portsmouth.

Six people had to be evacuated from a terraced house in Sheffield Road, Fratton, after a fire started on the roof of the property.

A crew from Southsea fire station were called out at about 12.20am and when they arrived there were flames on the roof.

Firefighters saw something on fire on the surface of the roof, rather than inside it.

Watch manager Dave Stephens said: ‘There was a total of six people, but they were in no danger whatsoever because no smoke had infiltrated the building.

‘It was just on the roof.’

The fire took about 15 minutes to put out using hoses and breathing apparatus.

The house was a bedsit-type property.

Mr Stephens added: ‘I don’t know what caused the fire, but it would indicate being suspicious.’
