The initiative, part of a national scheme of 11 events across the UK yesterday – aims to encourage 500,000 more people to swim regularly by 2015.

Duncan said: ‘It was fantastic, there’s a great range of different swimmers, including little Kiera who has swam for 250m.’

Kiera Miles, eight, from Southsea was at the event with her family.

Also at the pool were the Southbourne Squids, who came to the event to swim as a team from Dorset.
