SUPERMARKET staff from across Portsmouth will be taking part in The News’ annual fundraiser Blue Day.

Tesco has signed up for the day, which will see its employees from local stores ditching their uniforms for something blue.

Throughout Portsmouth and Havant, Tesco Express and superstores will be raising money for the Tom Prince Cancer Trust on Friday.

Mike Abbott, first line manager at the Leigh Park store, in Greywell Road, has been encouraging staff members to get inventive.

He said: ‘We really enjoy taking part in Blue Day every year.

‘We are a community store which takes pride in our community work and we want to show our support for a local charity.

‘Cancer affects thousands of people so we want to raise money for the trust.

‘All the staff will be dressing in blue or dressing in costumes so it should be exciting to see what everyone comes up with.

‘We do encourage as many staff members to take part and they all really enjoy it.’

He added: ‘As a company in Portsmouth and Havant, we do like signing up for a Blue Day.

‘Nearly every Tesco Express has registered which is fantastic.’

This Friday marks the ninth Blue Day organised by the Tom Prince Cancer Trust and The News.

The trust was set up in memory of Tom Prince who died in 2004 after suffering from the rare bone cancer osteosarcoma.

The 15-year-old was a big Pompey fan and when the club reached the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley Stadium in 2008, The News started Blue Day to help the charity run by Tom’s parents Clinton and Adele.

On the eve of Pompey’s last home game of the 2014-15 season, schools and businesses are encouraged to dress in blue and hold blue-themed activities in a bid to raise cash.

Adele and Clinton set up the trust with a target of raising £1m.

With the help of Blue Day, their total so far is £930,000.

Mike added: ‘We really want to help the trust reach that £1m target.

‘It is fantastic that they are so close and we want to contribute as much as we can.’
