A CYCLING enthusiast is set to complete a 300-mile ride on a Raleigh Chopper in aid of a charity close to his heart.

Fraser Colquhoun  is set to complete a route from Venice to Rome on a 1970s Raleigh Chopper, to raise money for Prostate Cancer Research as his 74-year-old father Iain was diagnosed with prostate cancer 10 years ago.

The 52-year-old from Fareham said: ‘The reason I chose Prostate Cancer Research is because my father has prostate cancer and he’s in a bit of a bad way at the moment.

‘It’s slowly debilitating watching him just fade away to be honest with you. It’s a cruel, horrible disease.

‘Seeing what he’s going through, if I can raise money for awareness and research into that it might stop other people going through what he’s going through right now.’

The journey will take Fraser around four days and he will complete between 60 to 100 miles a day through hilly terrain on a bike designed for style as opposed to practicality.

He said: ‘The reason I chose it is because I always wanted a chopper as a kid.

‘I bought a wreck of one, restored it and it has just been sat in my bedroom ever since and I thought well, I’m going to put it to good use.

Although it is his first fundraiser, Fraser has been a keen cyclist for many years.

‘I’ve done Land’s End to John O’Groats, last year I did Paris to Nice, they were very challenging but this time i thought i’d do it on a Chopper because it adds an extra twist.

‘Unfortunately being over 6ft, you really can’t get into a proper biking position, so every pedal stroke hurts.

‘At the end of the day the pain I’ll be going through is nothing compared to what a cancer patient goes through every day and that is what is going to motivate me to turn those pedals’.

Fraser sets off from Rome in September next year, with a fundraising target of £2,000.
