A final Whitehall decision on a new £30m route for the Chichester-Havant section of the A27 was to be taken in the spring.

This was revealed by the Minister of Transport, Lynda Chalker, in a letter to Chichester MP Anthony Nelson.

Pressure from local authorities and residents for the new road to be built as soon as possible had grown over recent years. District councillors warned that Chichester housing plans were being seriously held up because of the delayed decision.
