THE RNLI has received an early boost for 2013 after being handed a large donation from firefighters.

A cheque of £1,000 was handed to officials from Hayling RNLI station at Havant fire station.

The money was raised from last year’s Hayling Kayak Event, in which a team of more than 20 competitors – many of them firefighters – paddled 18 miles around the island.

The event also raised £1,100 for The Fire Fighters Charity.

Watch managers Martyn Elliott and Perry Dodgson met at Havant fire station with the third organiser, Mark Pannell, to present the cheques.

Mr Pannell, from Hayling fire station, said: ‘It was a fantastic effort both on the day and since – both to succeed in the challenge and raise this much money.’

Mr Dodgson added: ‘It was a massive team effort between the fire service and the RNLI and we are looking forward to an even bigger event next year.’

Peter Walmsley, from Hayling RNLI, said ‘We are most grateful for this donation which will help to support us in maintaining our high standards of safety equipment.’

Lin Malt, service co-ordinator for The Fire Fighters Charity, said: ‘I am totally amazed at what the guys have achieved here and am most grateful.’
