Thousands of sailors featured on interactive Jutland map

The internet tribute to men who served at the Battle of Jutland was launched in the run up to the 100th anniversary of the First World War battle at the end of last month.

And although the centenary has now passed, relatives are still being encouraged to add details of their loved ones to the record.

The interactive map has been organised by the National Museum of the Royal Navy in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard and includes photographs of sailors together with details such as date of birth and death, ship served in at the battle, and decorations won.

Casey Keppel-Compton, digital manager of the project, said the museum, which has worked in conjunction with the Imperial War Museum, started with information on 3,907 sailors originally and then built on that.

She said: ‘We had reached 6,000 sailors by February when we went live with the map.

‘Since then details of hundreds more sailors have been added by members of the public and our team of 15 volunteers.’

She said that more than 6,800 men were now featured but that it was hoped that the total would continue to grow.’

‘We know that there are more than 10,000 sailors out there to be found and placed on the map, so we want relatives to add their details at map.jutland.org.uk’ she added.

‘If anyone wants to contribute but does not have access to the internet or is not confident using it, they are equally welcome to come along to the museum or contact us and one of our volunteers will be more than happy to add the informations’ she said.
