RSPCA inspectors were called to West Street, Fareham last week after receiving reports from neighbours that the animal was left outside, tied to a post on its own for four days.

A neighbour posted images of the dog on Facebook which went on to be shared by more than 10,000 people.

However, despite the shots, which show the dog being left with a bowl of water seemingly out of reach and some dog treats scattered around it, an inspector said the dog’s health was fine.

A spokesperson for RSPCA said: ‘The dog was found to be fit and healthy but the owner willingly signed the dog over into RSPCA care as his circumstances had recently changed.

‘We hope to find a new home for the dog soon.’

The neighbour who had reported the dog to the RSPCA said: ‘I thought it was disgusting the way the dog was treated.

‘The owner had tied the dog up in a way that it looked like if the dog tried to move that it would hurt itself.

‘It was left outside all day and all night from the Saturday until last Tuesday.

‘It seemed like it wasn’t allowed in to the house and you could see that it wanted to be let in.

‘The weather was burning hot at times throughout the day, it was just inhumane to leave it out in that heat.’
