A hospice is getting an early Christmas present of £1,000 after the valiant efforts of a tyre firm.

Staff at Horndean Tyres have spent the last few months fundraising for The Rowans Hospice in Purbrook.

For a month a pound from every tyre sold was added to the kitty.

The company also arranged for a Formula One car to visit Asda, at Bedhampton, and people donated money to sit in the car.

The event raised almost 400, together with 600 from the tyres.

Pat Michie, 59, director of the firm, said it was a cause close to her heart after she suffered from cancer.

Mrs Michie said: 'We want to thank everyone for supporting us.

'We wanted to do it because the Rowans is a local charity and we are local people.

'It's dear to me as I do voluntary work there.

'They need the money - it's as simple as that!'

The fundraiser came as the firm is celebrating 30 years in business.

It was once based at Purbrook in a smaller garage, but has expanded and moved to larger premises in Horndean.
