Altered plans for Gosport busway given the go-ahead

As previously reported in The News, a new plan had been put forward for the BRT route, which would avoid the demolition of the bridge in Rowner Road in favour of a ramped bus lane.

The previous option to create a junction would have meant a three-month closure of Rowner Road, and cyclists and pedestrians being exposed to traffic that would previously have used the bridge.

After being approved by Hampshire County Council, Gosport Borough Council gave the new plan the seal of approval, allowing the extra land to be used for construction.

Cllr Stephen Philpott, chairman of the economic development board, is also a Hampshire county councillor.

He was the one who previously raised concerns about the risks a junction would present to cyclists and pedestrians.

A survey carried out by Gosport Borough Council had indicated that around 1,600 people use the current underpass every day.

He said: '˜The busway is a successful scheme which is helping lots of people get around the area more easily, and an extension would be very welcome.

'˜Gosport has been working closely with Hampshire, backing this alternative plan.

'˜I'm delighted they are now looking at it. Gosport is very happy to help make it happen by providing some land that we own.

'˜This is great news for people cycling and walking on this route, and for drivers too. This is a good example of our councils working together to find the best way forward.'

Hampshire County Council will now submit a new planning application, carry out design work and seek additional funding for the project '“ which has been funded by £6.93m grant from the government.
