Building of new bypass welcomed by Hampshire County Council

HAMPSHIRE County Council has welcomed the news that the much-anticipated Stubbington bypass has been given the green light.

The news was announced on Thursday by Gosport MP Caroline Dinenage, who said she had made it one of her priorities when she was elected in 2010.

The county council gave £8.5m towards the project, with the government handing over the remaining £25.7m needed. Building is expected to start next year on the 2.2-mile single carriageway that will run from Titchfield Road to Gosport Road.

Councillor Rob Humby, the council’s executive member of environment and transport, said: ‘This major infrastructure project is needed and backed by the people the investment is designed to benefit. We have demonstrated our own commitment by assigning £8.5m towards it.

‘This is one of the biggest schemes Hampshire County Council has delivered to date, and we look forward to the exciting time ahead.’
