Perseus Place resident, Karen Aylwin said: ‘I saw them cleaning up the blood and I saw him lying on the floor. It is a wonder that there are not more accidents along here, it can be a dangerous road. The whole thing caused chaos.’

Another Perseus Place resident, who didn’t want to be named, said: ‘It was just horrendous.

‘It was awful and I have been thinking about him for the rest of the day, wondering whether he was okay.

‘My stomach was turning over and over hoping he would be okay.’

The road is a busy transport hub, with buses collecting students from nearby South Downs College.

Many of the students were shocked by what they saw.

Student Nathan Eastly, 17, said: ‘I heard that someone had been hit by a car. It was shocking but it is usually fine along here. When I got here I could see the accident, everyone was around him.’

A South Central Ambulance Service spokesman said: ‘We were called at 12.10pm to a crash between a car and a cyclist. The cyclist suffered a serious head injury and was flown by air ambulance to Southampton General Hospital.’

Police were also called. The road was closed in the afternoon following the crash, reopening at 3.20pm.
