Newly-elected councillor appointed to Portsmouth traffic role vows to work up long-term solutions

Cllr Jim Fleming says he plans to set up a cross-party panel that will consult with the public on ideas that will help to improve the road network over the next three decades.

The Tory group member said: ‘It’s going to be a challenge. It’s certainly one of the most front-facing roles in that it affects people’s ability to drive to work and park in the city.

‘What I am hoping for is to take Portsmouth to where it needs to be in terms of transport in 30 years’ time, as opposed to 30 months’ time.

‘One of the things I will be doing is setting up a cross party and public transport consultation.

‘There are going to be some particular things that will need doing if we want a transport offer that will work in 2050, and that’s why I will go to get everyone on board early.

‘It’s not about working on piecemeal projects, as that won’t seek to address the problems across the whole area.

‘It’s about finding solutions.’

Meanwhile, former councillors Terry Hall and Alistair Thompson were presented with certificates after being appointed honorary aldermans. It means that despite no longer being elected members, they are still seen as important figures in the city.

Former Lib Dem Mrs Hall said: ‘I am really proud and I hope I will be able to serve the city, as I have done in the past.

‘I hope I will be able to represent Portsmouth.’

Mr Thompson, a former Tory councillor, said: ‘I had a great experience on the council. The authority can do so much and we do great things representing the citizens of this city.’
