Pensioner hit by motorcycle on danger road calls for action

Dave Chase, 69, was flung into the middle of the road after being struck by a motorcyclist in Havant Road, in Stoke, Hayling Island.

He was crossing the road near his house.

Today he is lucky to be alive after escaping the accident with cuts and bruises.

But the incident has prompted him and his wife, Ursula Chase, to launch a petition to get a pedestrian crossing before someone is seriously hurt.

The couple said the ‘record’ for waiting to cross the road is 18 minutes.

The area, near the Copse Lane junction, includes a council car park, a post office and newsagent and a takeaway.

Mr Chase, a retired manager for a tractor firm, said he could barely remember the accident, which happened at about 6.30pm on April 28.

It is thought the motorcycle was travelling at about 25mph.

He said: ‘I can’t remember being hit.

‘The next thing I remember is lying in the road with people standing over me.

‘I was really lucky.

‘The reduced speed limit on the road of 30mph was the biggest factor in saving me.’

The stretch used to be 40mph, but was reduced to 30mph last year.

But the Chases said the road still remains dangerous for pedestrians.

Mr Chase said: ‘In the evenings they are coming past at 60mph and the police are not monitoring it at all.

‘It’s the only main road on and off the island and people just can’t cross the road.’

The couple have lived in Havant Road for nearly 40 years and they said the difference in the traffic was ‘unbelievable’ as hundreds of new homes have been built on Hayling.

Ursula, 69, a retired nurse, said: ‘We definitely need something because somebody is going to get killed.’
