REVEALED: Portsmouth bus route faces axe in bid to save council £56,000 a year

CUTS could be made to a key bus route operating across Portsmouth in an effort to save the council tens of thousands of pounds.

The city’s Tory traffic boss, Councillor Jim Fleming, will consider proposals today to axe the 19/19A service, covering areas including the city centre, Old Portsmouth Point, Central Southsea, Fratton Way, Baffins and Portsmouth College, to claw back £56,000 a year.

A dossier to be put before Cllr Fleming at a public meeting, taking place in Portsmouth Guildhall from 4pm, warns a number of roads ‘will no longer be serviced by public transport’ should the bus route go and some passengers may have to find alternative buses ‘an average of 490 metres away’ to get around.

Council transport director, Alan Cufley, said: ‘The cost per passenger for the 19/19A bus service is high, due to the low level of passenger boarding numbers on the route.’

Between April to December last year, 18,153 passengers used the service, equivalent to an average of 66 passengers per day.
