UK Coastguard received a VHF Radio call from the kayaker at 12.40pm, who reported he’d lost his paddle and needed assistance.

The Portsmouth Coastguard Rescue Team, two RNLI Portsmouth Lifeboats and the new AW189 UK Coastguard search and rescue helicopter based at Lee-on-the-Solent conducted an extensive search of the area – with nothing found.

A spokesperson for the Solent Coastguard said: ‘The search has been suspended as nothing untoward was found.

‘We’re happy we’ve conducted a very extensive search of the area and believe that at present, nobody is at risk.

‘If further information does come to light we will re-evaluate.

UK Coastguard is appealing to vessels nearby or members of the public who were in the area at the time to call 999 and ask for the Coastguard, if they have any information on the kayaker or saw him get out of trouble himself.
