UPDATE: Motorist taken to hospital after four-vehicle smash in Portsmouth

A PERSON has been taken to hospital following a four-vehicle pile-up on the M27 this morning.

The crash happened in the westbound carriageway close to Junction 12 at 8.21am causing major delays to commuters travelling from Portsmouth towards Southampton.

Initial reports suggested five vehicles had been involved in the smash.

However, an official from Hampshire police said this was incorrect and that three cars and a van had collided.

The spokeswoman said: ‘We were called at 8.21am to a collision on the westbound carriageway of the M27 just before the M275 join.

‘Three cars and a van were involved. The crash blocked lane three. One and two continued to run,

‘One driver has sustained minor injuries and has been taken to Queen Alexandra Hospital by paramedics.’

The fire service confirmed they had been informed about the crash but were not in attendance.

The police official added that recovery work was now underway and expected the road to be cleared of debris shortly.

She wished to thank drivers for their patience.
