Watch: Spectators in lucky escape on day of crashes at Goodwood

Video shows the dramatic moment a car flipped into the air and crashed at Goodwood Motor Circuit.

The footage shows Stephen Bond’s car flip into the air and appear to land in a tunnel under the track.

He is said to have suffered only a broken collarbone, while Goodwood confirmed that no members of the crowd were injured by a wheel which came off and appeared to land close to spectators.

“Following yesterday’s incident in the Brooks Trophy race at 09.05hrs, driver Stephen Bond was taken to hospital for checks,” Goodwood said.

“Though he did suffer some injuries, Goodwood has been informed that they were not of a serious nature.

“Goodwood was delighted to hear that, given the significance of the incident, nothing more serious was reported. We wish him a good and swift recovery.”

It was the first of two accidents at the track yesterday.

Driver Michiel Smits was airlifted to hospital after crashing while taking part in a race during the Goodwood Members’ Meeting when he crashed shortly before 4pm on Sunday.

In a statement, Goodwood said: “Following yesterday’s incident during the Bruce McLaren Trophy race at 15.45hrs, driver Michiel Smits was taken by air ambulance to the nearest trauma centre, where his condition was stabilised.

“He spent the night in hospital with family members. We wish him a good and swift recovery.

“Goodwood will continue to provide updates as soon as further information is available.”
