M3 stretch closed for 'several hours' after 600 litres of diesel spills onto carriageway

A drive shaft fell from a lorry when it suffered a mechanical failure this morning.

The fuel tank ruptured, sending 600 litres of diesel flooding onto the carriageway.

Another vehicle then crashed into the fallen drive shaft.

It happened eastbound between junction 10 and 9 near Winchester.

Highways England said drivers should follow the solid black diamond symbol for diversions.

Exit at junction 10 and take the roundabout's third exit to the A31, then take the next roundabout's second exit continuing on the A31 to the roundabout with the A272.

Then take the first exit to continue north to junction 9 of the M3 and re-join the motorway.

The agency first warned about the incident at around 4am on Sunday.
