Person is hit by train causing major delays on Portsmouth rail services between Fratton, Havant and Fareham

A PERSON has been hit by a train sparking major travel disruption to rail services.

The incident is understood to have taken place along the rail route between Havant and Fratton, with National Rail advising customers to follow the hashtag #Cosham on Twitter for details.

However, in a statement, Southern Rail said: ‘Earlier this morning, a person was hit by a train between Fratton / Havant and Fareham.

Network Rail have advised that the emergency services have concluded their investigations and that lines have now reopened. However, whilst service recovers, trains between these stations may still be cancelled, delayed or revised.

‘We anticipate that disruption will continue until 9am.’

Nearby trains are being held at stations or diverted to Portsmouth Harbour instead.

Replacement buses have been requested to run on routes between Southampton Central to Portsmouth in both directions, calling at all stations as well as Eastleigh to Portsmouth Harbour in both direction, calling at all stations.

A spokesman for Southern has urged people to ‘allow plenty of extra time’ for journeys.

‘If you have not yet set off to the station, please travel later on today,’ the spokesman added.

‘If you can't delay your journey and need to travel by train now then this will take a lot longer than usual, and you will need to use a different route to get around the line closure.’
