PRESSURE is piling on an authority to help ease congestion in a town.
Bedhampton councillor Ken Smith has written to highway officials at Hampshire County Council, urging them to take a look at the sequencing of traffic lights through Havant.
It comes as reducing congestion remains a big priority for Havant Borough Council, in particular the traffic bottleneck along Harts Farm Way at Broadmarsh and leading up to the Rusty Cutter roundabout.
However, in a letter to The News, the county’s highway chief, Councillor Sean Woodward, has said sorting out the congestion at Harts Farm Way could cost up to £2.6m.
Cllr Smith is concerned about the traffic flow from the Langstone roundabout all the way up Park Road South and North.
The congestion builds up even more during rush hour as many drivers do not want to wait in queues along Harts Farm Way.
‘I believe that the sequencing of the traffic lights needs looking at,’ said Cllr Smith.
‘It is a regular occurrence to see northbound traffic at a standstill all the way back to the Langstone roundabout.’
Cllr Smith has also raised concerns about tailbacks along the A27 off-slip into Havant, where the set-up of the lanes makes it difficult for cars to turn left towards Hayling Island. And he believes the mini-roundabout at Bedhampton Hill needs urgent attention.
Cllr Woodward said: ‘While I completely appreciate the frustration of people travelling through this area of Havant at peak times, I’m afraid it is inevitable that as consented developments become successful there will inevitably be an impact on the traffic.’
He said the authority had carried out a recent study to look at options to improve the junction of Harts Farm Way, Southmoor Lane, Brockhampton Road and Brookside Road.
‘The study explored possibilities of converting the mini-roundabout into a traffic light control junction,’ he said.
‘But the technical study concluded that a signalised junction would not solve the congestion problems at peak traffic hours and would cost up to £2.6million to implement.
‘We’re now looking urgently into other potential modifications to the junction to improve traffic flow.’
