The air ambulance was called to the scene along with paramedics.

Police closed the northbound section of the road from Gosport to Fareham and closed one lane in the other direction, causing big tail backs through Fareham and bringing the traffic to a standstill in Gosport.

The roads are now partially opened, although the bridge at the start of Newgate Lane remains closed while an investigation is carried out. A diversion is in place.

The woman was airlifted to Southampton General Hospital with serious head injuries.

Details of the accident are unclear and police are appealing for witnesses.
