RAIL passengers faced disruptions to their journeys yesterday after tracks were damaged during engineering work.

People travelling from Portsmouth stations to Southampton Central faced delays when engineers accidentally damaged the points at which trains move between tracks on the line between Eastleigh and Brockenhurst.

The error was made while they replaced track between the stations.

The work was due to finish at 3pm but the damage meant services were disrupted for a further hour and a quarter while repairs were made.

Passengers travelling to Southampton Central from Fareham had to get a bus.

Gary Gaskarth of Network Rail said: ‘We apologise to our passengers for the delays that were caused to their journeys.’
