Dramatic footage shows man overboard being rescued in Langstone Harbour

A FERRY skipper says that his training kicked in ‘like instinct’ when he saw a man being carried away by the tide yesterday.

Colin Hill, skipper of the Hayling Ferry, saw a man being pulled out of Langstone Harbour yesterday after his dingy capsized.

Colin and the rest of his crew were able to rescue the man in a matter of minutes – recovering his vessel later in the day.

He said: ‘I saw him coming down the harbour being carried by the tide – he tried to grab hold of another boat and went overboard.

‘Our training just kicked in like instinct; everyone just did what they were supposed to do and we got him out as quickly as we could.’

The incident, which took place at 3.15pm yesterday, was over in a matter of moments as the man was pulled to safety.

Mr Hill said: ‘It was all sorted within three minutes, but it felt more like 15.

‘The man himself was okay actually, but we called the ambulance as we always do in situations like this, just as a precaution.

‘He then came back later on in the day and seemed pretty healthy –  we even managed to get his dingy back.’
