A 34-year-old man has been arrested following a collision in Southsea yesterday which left an elderly woman fighting for her life.

The man, who is understood to have been the driver of a truck owned by Walton Civil Engineering & Surfacing Contractors at the time of the collision, has been arrested on suspicion of driving without due care and attention.

The victim, 77-year-old Audrey Clover, was walking across Milton Road at the time of the collision, by the junction with Locksway Road.

The News understands she had been on her way to Milton Park for a walk with her husband, David, at the time.

The truck had been heading south along Milton Road when it approached the junction – a notorious accident blackspot.

A spokeswoman for Hampshire Constabulary said the man, from Wickham, has been bailed pending further investigation, and will reappear at Portsmouth Central police station on July 10.

No-one from the company, which has a depot in Eastleigh, was available to comment.

Mrs Clover remains in critical condition at Southampton General Hospital.

Witnesses or anyone with information about the collision are asked to contact the Roads Policing Unit at Fratton Police Station in Portsmouth by phoning 101. Mini-com users can phone 01962 875000. Information can be given anonymously by phoning the independent Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.
