There are expected to be new calls for improvements to the A27 after two minor crashes sparked huge queues around Chichester

Motorists reported ‘traffic hell’ during rush-hour yesterday afternoon.

The nearly always congested stretch of the bypass around Chichester was brought to a virtual standstill because of two incidents in close proximity.

A minor collision on the Bognor Regis roundabout between a lorry and a VW Polo just before 4pm has contributed to tailbacks in all directions on the A27 and the A259 towards Bognor and into Chichester.

There wee also reports of a broken down skip lorry partially blocking the eastbound carriageway of the A259 between Whyke Road and the A27.

Traffic was also queuing eastbound on the A285 Westhampnett Road between the Alexandra Road junction and the Church Road junction where roadworks are in place.

And it was also reportedly slow on the A27 around Arundel, through Worthing and around Shoreham.

Roadworks in Lancing also caused congestion on the A259 Brighton Road in both directions.

The continued problems along the A27 from Chichester to Shoreham will renew long-standing calls for major investment to improve the trunk road.
