Part of a major Southsea street could be under threat of collapsing if emergency structure work is not carried out.

Portsmouth City Council contractors Colas said it is aware part of the Osborne Road carriageway has sunk because the ground underneath has become structurally unsafe.

Emergency repair work is to start in Osborne Road tonight at 8pm to find the source and begin repair work.

Repairs of the carriageway at the junction of Elphinstone Road, will go on for two nights.

Linzi Stean, communications officer for Colas, said: ‘Osborne Road will be closed to all through-traffic for the duration of the works however all businesses will be open as normal with full pedestrian access and residents will be able to access their properties.

‘A signed diversion will be in place via Clarence Parade, Clarendon Road, Osborne Road and Portland Road.

‘Road users are advised to follow the signed diversion in order to keep traffic in the area running as smoothly as possible.

‘The junction of Elphinstone Road will be marshalled to guide residents around any works traffic.

‘It is essential that we get into Osborne Road to investigate and repair the issues as a matter of urgency.

‘We apologise to residents and businesses in the area for an inconvenience this may cause, however we will endeavour to complete the works as quickly as possible in order to minimise disruption.’

And First bus has posted a diverted route for service one, which usually goes through Osborne Road, to get to The Hard.

Instead the service will turn right at Palmerston Road into Portland Road, then at the Telephone House traffic lights will turn left into Elm Grove to Kings Road roundabout, then left into Pier Road and on to Pembroke Road.

From The Hard, service one will go the same route in reverse from Pembroke Road, Pier Road, Kings Road roundabout to Elm Grove, Portland Road and back on route.
