Brittany Ferries’ fastcat vessel the Normandie Express has been involved in a search for a sailing boat.

The ship was on her way to Portsmouth from Le Havre when it found the vessel, which had been reported missing 24 hours previously.

Crew members from the Normandie Express launched the ship’s fast rescue boat to investigate - but found no-one on board.

A spokesman from the ferry company, which has its UK headquarters in Portsmouth, said: ‘The Normandie Express was asked to hang around while a helicopter came out from the French Search and Rescue.

‘A crew went to investigate and unfortunately found no-one on board, so it looks like it might be a tragic outcome.

‘The Normandie Express is now underway again, running about an hour late.’

The ship’s next sailing, which is the 4pm from Portsmouth to Cherbourg, has been delayed as a result.
