TAXI fares in Gosport will increase by less than one per cent this year.
Licensed taxi drivers had told Gosport Borough Council they did not want a percentage increase for their customers because of the tough economic conditions.
Councillor John Beavis, chairman of the licensing committee which sets the tariff, said: ‘All of the 68 licence holders were sent a survey to ask them what they preferred.
‘There were three options, including a 4.6 per cent increase.
‘But the majority were for no increase this year and it was decided to go with the majority.’
The pull-off rate for taxis in Gosport was reduced to £2.20 from £2.80.
This now covers the first 199 metres of the journey instead of the first 706 metres.
The change means there will be an increase of 0.39 per cent.
