Operators have said the Hayling Ferry is not making crossings between Eastney and Hayling Island today because of a '˜mechanical issue' discovered yesterday.

Ferry skipper Colin Hill said after the learning of the fault, which he said could '˜damage' the engine if left unfixed, he opted not to run the service today.

'˜The issue was discovered yesterday so I made the decision to suspend the service,' he said.

'˜We tried to get a replacement boat for today but we were unsuccessful.

'˜If the problem runs over to tomorrow as well, I will be able to get another.'

Despite the ferry not running, it is understood the link's supporting bus links will continue to run through Hayling Island and Portsmouth.

The extent of the issue taking the boat out of service will be assessed today.

An update is expected at 5pm.
