TRAVELLERS to western France can now get there a bit quicker as high-speed sailings from Portsmouth to Normandy resume for the summer.

The company’s fastcraft Normandie Express began sailing between Portsmouth and Cherbourg yesterday and will offer a daily service on the three-hour route until September 9.

Additionally, from May 22 until September 7, the craft will offer weekend sailings to Le Havre, taking 3hrs 45mins.

Normandie Express has operated these high speed sailings from Portsmouth since 2005.

With a top speed of 40 knots – around 45mph – it greatly reduces the cross-Channel journey time.

Since then, the road journey on both sides of the Channel has improved too.

In 2011 the A3 Hindhead Tunnel opened.

On the other side of the Channel in 2013, improvements to the N13 and A84 have considerably reduced driving times from Cherbourg to the French motorway network.
