Long delays as fuel tanker with broken clutch completely blocks main road on Hayling Island

A FUEL tanker with a broken clutch has completely blocked the road on and off Hayling Island.

Motorists are facing lengthy delays after a Reynolds Logistics vehicle became stuck across both lanes outside the Applegreen service station on Havant Road (A3023).

The site’s manager said the incident occurred at about 10.30am – causing queues to build from central Havant, past the Langstone Roundabout down to Stoke, on Hayling Island.

Wishing to be identified as James, the Applegreen employee said the vehicle was still there at 12.25pm, but a recovery vehicle had been on-site to tow it away.

‘The problem is a broken clutch,’ he said.

‘They have tried to repair it in the road, but that hasn’t been possible and a recovery vehicle from Boarhunt is here now to tow him away.’

Despite the A3023 being the only way on and off Hayling Island, Applegreen staff have carried out a budding traffic plan to keep drivers moving.

James said: ‘To keep traffic moving, we’ve made a diversion through the petrol station.

‘People who want to get off the island have been travelling around pumps one and two, and people coming the other way have gone around the others.’

It is believed police were also called to the service station, which has 12 pumps.

Users in the closed Facebook group, Hayling Island – which has more than 18,000 members – reported traffic to be clear at 12.47pm.
