'˜The problem is a broken clutch,' he said.

'˜They have tried to repair it in the road, but that hasn't been possible and a recovery vehicle from Boarhunt is here now to tow him away.'

Despite the A3023 being the only way on and off Hayling Island, Applegreen staff have carried out a budding traffic plan to keep drivers moving.

James said: '˜To keep traffic moving, we've made a diversion through the petrol station.

'˜People who want to get off the island have been travelling around pumps one and two, and people coming the other way have gone around the others.'

It is believed police were also called to the service station, which has 12 pumps.
