A man from Southsea has been charged by police for stealing a car and being involved in a pursuit across West Sussex.

Matthew Hall, 25, from Beach Road, has been charged with burglary, dangerous driving, aggravated vehicle taking, driving while disqualified and driving without insurance.

He appeared at Worthing Magistrates Court where he did not enter a plea, and will next appear at Chichester Crown Court on Friday, August 30.

A spokeswoman from Sussex Police said: ‘Just after 8pm, car keys for a VW Passat were stolen from Steyning Sports Centre in Horsham, and the offenders fled in the car. The car was eventually stopped in Hampshire near Emsworth by Hampshire Police officers.

‘One suspect is still outstanding and police are appealing for any witnesses who may have seen the second suspect.

The stolen car was driven the wrong way down the eastbound carriageway of the A27, at around 8.30pm on Saturday.

The pursuit ended when another car was hit near the Emsworth junction, and all five of the occupants were taken to hospital with minor injuries after being cut out of the wreckage by firefighters.

One driver caught up in the incident captured video footage as the car sped through stationary traffic before crashing.
