THE marine industry in Britain has been given a shot in the arm by the government, after business minister Mark Prisk announced a new strategy yesterday.

The Marine Industries Growth Strategy will incorporate business, government and the academic world, and is the first of its kind in the UK.

It could lead to a £25bn marine industry by 2020.

Launching the strategy at the PSP Southampton Boat Show yesterday he said: ‘By harnessing the potential of the sector, and the research potential of our universities, we can build our strengths and capabilities to make sure that Britain’s marine sector has a bright and successful future.’

Gosport MP Caroline Dinenage earlier this year called upon Mr Prisk and the government to support the industry more.

He also visited Portsmouth and Gosport recently to see how important the sector is in the region

And she said last night: ‘I welcome this news because anything that helps the industry is massively important for our area because there are so many jobs that depend on it.’
