ONE of the area’s busiest roads is set for a £8.5m overhaul.
Work on Newgate Lane in Fareham will begin in the coming year after the funding was agreed.
It will include widening the road to a dual carriageway between the Longfield Avenue and Speedfields Park junctions, shared cycle paths and footways, and improvements to the Peel Common Junction.
The whole scheme was given the go-ahead as Secretary of State, Eric Pickles, confirmed the Solent Local Enterprise Partnership would invest the final £2m, to add to contributions from Hampshire County Council and the Home and Communities Agency.
Gosport MP Caroline Dinenage welcomed the significant infrastructure investment.
She said it will transform access to the new Daedalus Enterprise Zone and reduce congestion leaving the peninsula.
She said: ‘Transport infrastructure is such a major issue in our area, and I’ve fought since my election for improvements.
‘With the location of an Enterprise Zone on the Daedalus site, we’ve confirmed the strategic importance of this road to the council and government, and managed to secure this key investment.
‘This multi-million pound package will transform travel via Newgate Lane and will be a major boost for commuters, businesses and our local economy.’
More information on the improvements will be announced by Hampshire County Council over the course of the coming year.
