SHUTTLE buses that took shoppers to Marks & Spencer and Sainsbury’s have been scrapped by a bus company after an unsuccessful six-month trial.

Xelabus ran the free service from Warsash to Hedge End Retail Park every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

It started the service in January after rival operator First pulled out.

Due to low passenger numbers, which at their highest peaked at 20 per bus, Xelabus has withdrawn the X32 service and the last one will run on Friday.

The bus company did not receive a subsidy from the council or the supermarkets for this service and said it was not viable to continue to operate without support.

A spokesman said: ‘There was a low patronage and we ran it from January 1 for six months. If more people had used it or if the stores would’ve dipped into their pockets, we could’ve continued.’

Xelabus also operates a free service, the X21, from Warsash to Tesco Bursleden which will continue as Tesco pays them a subsidy.
