RAIL commuters faced lengthy delays going to and from London last night due to a signalling fault.

South West Trains said the problem, which occurred near Liphook, meant trains between Portsmouth and London Waterloo were delayed by up to 40 minutes. Other trains were diverted via Eastleigh.

The firm also reported signalling problems preventing trains travelling between Portsmouth Harbour and Portsmouth and Southsea stations about 6pm yesterday. Passengers were able to use buses with their rail tickets instead.
