A MAINTENANCE crew was sent to a burst water main after a Portsmouth Water worker spotted it on his way to work.

Darren Izzard pulled up and shut off the mains when he saw the leak, in Newgate Lane, Fareham, at 7.30am this morning.

A team from the firm is now at the leak.

The burst was caused by a change of pressure in the network.

Emergency water supplies have been sent to two nearby properties.

Rod Porteous, engineering director at Portsmouth Water, praised Darren’s initiative.

He said: ‘One of our lads spotted some water, stopped and it was the burst.

‘He used his initiative and shut it off.

‘We’re really quite pleased with that.’
