UPDATE: Portsmouth-London train line reopened after ‘significant damage’ to railway

RAIL services were disrupted when a train came into contact with a metal object left on the line between Hamble and Netley.

South West Trains has said the object caused damage to equipment under a train and is suspected of being vandalism.

As the train was temporarily unable to move forward after hitting the obstruction at 7.30am and bus replacement services were put in place between Southampton Central and Fareham.

All lines opened at around 9.25am and services have since returned to normal.

Several rail operators were affected by the issue.
