DRIVERS are being advised to consider alternative routes around Wickham as the annual horse fair is to return.

The fair comes to the village on Tuesday, May 20 and will see a funfair in The Square and a gypsy horse run in Winchester Road.

Around 2,000 travellers from around the country attend the historic fair.

The police, Winchester City Council, Hampshire County Council, Wickham Parish Council and other authorities say they will work together to ensure the historic event is enjoyable and takes place with minimum disruption.

The Square will be closed to traffic from noon on Monday, May 19 until early Wednesday, May 21 to allow the clean-up to be completed.

The A334 Winchester Road will be closed between the traffic signals at Blind Lane and the roundabout junction of the A32 from 5am to 8pm on Tuesday, May 20.

The nearside lane of the A32 southbound at Hoads Hill, from the junction of the A334 to top of the hill, will be used for parking associated with the fair.

The council has warned that any vehicles parked in any unauthorised places will be towed away.
