WORK on a Portsmouth city centre roundabout is almost complete.

The roundabout in Winston Churchill Avenue, Somers Town has been closed to traffic since the middle of March.

The work has seen the roundabout, which links Winston Churchill Avenue to Isambard Brunel Road, reduced in size, to make way for new houses.

Traffic had been diverted south along the road up until Friday, since when westbound traffic from Bradford Junction has been able to turn right on to Isambard Brunel Road.

And council contractor Colas hopes the work will be finished, though with reduced lanes, ‘within the next couple of days’.

The work will be completed in May.

The Somers Town regeneration’s first phase will see a community hub built over Winston Churchill Avenue, as well as seven new council houses in Warwick Crescent, which are due for completion in August this year.

Work has started on 22 new council homes in Wellington Street, and in June 2010 an adventure playground opened at Tipton Crescent.
