POLICE have confirmed a woman’s body was found this morning on the A3.

At around 3.15am, police were called by South Central Ambulance Service to a report of a body on the carriageway near Clanfield.

A 48-year-old woman from the local area was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her next of kin have been informed.

Police are investigating the circumstances of her death and at this stage her death is not being treated as suspicious.

A home office post mortem is taking place this afternoon.

The A3 was closed north and southbound while scenes of crime officers carried out an initial investigation.

Traffic was being diverted via Chalton Lane – the A3 being closed from Windmill Hill to Gravel Hill. Tailbacks of up to half a mile were reported.

Both carriageways were reopened at 10.30am.
