MULTI-MILLION pound works to ease congestion and improve safety on Newgate Lane in Fareham will be finished in July, the council has told residents.

The programme of works is being carried out by Hampshire County Council in a bid to reduce delats getting to Fareham and Gosport.

Extra work on moving utility cables, additional drainage and adjusting the programme to maintain traffic capacity during the day, means the scheme will need to carry on past the original estimated completion date into July.

The additional traffic lanes and new traffic signals outside HMS Collingwood, and the northbound bypass lane past the Speedfield Park Roundabout will be completed in early July.

After this work, there will be less disruption to traffic as work moves on to the footpaths and cycleways that will provide links between Palmerston Drive and HMS Collingwood.

Work will also be carried out at off-peak times and overnight, minimising disruption even further.

The next phase of work to improve access to Fareham and Gosport will be to Peel Common Roundabout. This is planned to start in the summer holidays while the roads are less busy.
