NEIGHBOURS are delighted that an oak tree will not be cut down after councillors agreed to protect it.

Fareham Borough Council’s planning committee decided to place a preservation order on the oak at its meeting.

An application had been put in to fell the tree in Hook Lane, Warsash, as it was near a prefabricated outbuilding.

Despite officers recommending not to protect the tree, councillors disagreed.

Committee chairman Nick Walker said: ‘We felt it was a shame to lose it when there was no evidence it was disturbing the outbuilding.’

Neighbour Marie Grele said she was pleased that the tree would be preserved.

She said: ‘This tree can be seen from three roads in the village and is important to the environment.’
